Somers Point Lightning Freshmen
Win EHT Tournament!!!!
May 2, 2004
The Somers Point Street Hockey freshman team Walked
away with the hardware Sunday @ the Nationals in EHT. Capping off a
miracle run by defeating EHT, Bellmawr, and Marlton, the team ridded
themselves of their demons by winning in overtime on a blast off the
stick of Joey Toland (Tournament MVP) to take home the trophy.
Starting their run against Mays Landing they walked
away with a 4-0 victory and 17 points. Next up was Bellmawr. In a game
that wasn't even 3 minutes old sparks began to fly and players ended
up being ejected. After the smoke cleared Bellmawr left Somers Point
with a 5-2 victory and Somers Point Lightning was looking forward to
EHT on Friday night in EHT.
The game was never a contest as Somers Point
continued their recent domination EHT. Kyle Pollock scored a hat trick
in the game. Their next game pitted them against the Somers Point
Thunder. In a spirited game the Lightning came away victorious on Ron
Leopardi's 2 goals and headed to Sunday and another date with
Bellmawr.
Sunday's game was a tight match against Bellmawr.
By the time Bellmawr could take no more the Lightning had claimed a
2-0 win on goals by Joey Toland and Ken Flanagan.
Waiting for the Lightning was a surprise Marlton
team who smoked EHT in the other semi final game. Somers Point jumped
out to an early 4-1 lead on 2 goals by Tommy Stevens and Harry Faisst
also lightning the lamp but Marlton would not roll over. They battled
back and finally tied the game very late in the 3rd period and we were
headed for overtime.
In the overtime period both teams had their
chances but John Rennick turned Marlton away time after time to give
the Lightning a shot to win, and win they did when Toland started the
party with his game winning goal on assists from Ron Leopardi and Ken
Flanagan. Harry Faisst was named defensive MVP along with Toland's
tournament MVP.
