Swing At The Circle

This swing was in a large tree at the north side of Ship Channel Bridge just east of the circle. You are looking south east.  The photo is from 1938.  Later in the 40's the rope was much larger.

We would climb the big billboard sign and swing from the top out over traffic as it came down off of the bridge.  Some times it would scare the driver if he/she was not aware of the practice. Probably every kid in town knew of this swing and at some time had taken a ride from it.

There was a large house located on the hill behind you to the north.  It was owned by the Balsley's.  Jack Balsley lived in the house.   Many of us remember Jack because of his talent as an artist.  I remember him for his work on the slides he produced (Peter Pan) while attending the New York Avenue school. The slides were drawn on ground glass slides using special pencils. The slides were shown using an ancient magic lantern slide projector.
