Bill Winslow

I slowly drifted away from the old hometown in 1956 upon landing an exciting job with Allegheny Airlines. I was already married, living in Pleasantville while working in Pomona.  In 1959 I transferred to Philadelphia International Airport still working for Allegheny.

In Philadelphia I received the normal promotions that longevity produces. In 1968 we moved to Allentown, Pennsylvania, where I was Allegheny's Customer Service Manager for twenty one years.

While in Allentown, on income tax deadline day, April 15, 1968 our first daughter, Susan Lynn, was born. Another coincidence: was she was born on our wedding anniversary. She still blushes when I tell people she was born on the day we were married.

Our second daughter, Karen Lee, was born January 30, 1974.

When   asked  if  I  would   like to go to Fresno California as  Customer Service  Manager, USAir was in the middle of a large merger with Southern Pacific Airlines, I honestly had to look at a map to find out where Fresno was.

We arrived in California in May of 1989. Things were going badly  in the entire airline industry a year later. Many stations closed.

As I watched stations in California around me close one by one I could not help thinking it could include mine.   Lucky for me the airline was looking for upper management willing to take early retirement.

Raising my hand cautiously before I knew it, I was taken up on my friendly offer.   New Years Eve in 1990 was special because I retired at midnight.  It was a great career decision.

After retiring I bought a small truck and started to deliver cargo for several companies, including the airlines.   The business grew to the point I soon realized it was turning into another career with the same old pressures.   To protect my sanity, at age sixty two I removed myself as CEO, president, general manager and truck driver to become just another person living in California on social security.

Life with my wife, Jeanne, is fun.  We have two toy poodles,  two yellow cats and a neighbor's cat that insists he lives in our house. He uses the doggie door, eats our cats' snacks, and sleeps overnight because apparently he is an outside cat at his other home.

Please send me your story so I can do the same for you.
I will print nothing without your approval.
I will show it to you before I publish.
That's a promise.
